Diego reportedly eyeing House seat

Former Lt. Governor Diego T. Benavente is reportedly eyeing a run for the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections next year.
Benavente, the longest serving Speaker of the lower House, suffered his first political defeat when he and then Governor Juan N. Babauta sought re-election last year. In a four-way gubernatorial race, the Babauta/Benavente team placed third --- giving the stronghold Republican Party their worst gubernatorial election performance yet.
However, grassroots voters beleive the margin of defeat was due in part to two reasons. One was that the local GOP... (more)

Fitial taps Demapan as Acting Liaison Officer

On the heels of the Fitial Administration's plan to officially shut down the Marianas Hawaii Liaison Office, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial pulled the plug on his appointed Liaison Officer, Engracia R. Babauta. The governor has reportedly recalled the former liaison officer to Saipan for reassignment. However, it has been rumored that since her return to Saipan, she has had a shaky relationship with this administration.
Because of this, Fitial has tapped the services of the current Medical Referral Coordinator, Angel A. Demapan, to serve as the Acting Liaison Officer and to lead the final phase of... (more)

Report: Petition to remove liaison officer

PN WebCo. Inc. has received a tip from a CNMI resident in Honolulu that plans are underway to petition Governor Benigno R. Fitial to remove Liaison Officer Engracia R. Babauta from the Marianas Hawaii Liaison Office because of her incompetence and inability to manage and communicate with the office's staff and its constituents. According to our source, Babauta has been creating a coalition with a selected few from the patients and escorts and other CNMI residents in her bid to discredit and cause reputable damage to the image of the Fitial-Villagomez Administration.
The emailed statement... (more)

Note: The following is the text of Gov. Benigno R. Fitial State of the Commonwealth Address.
My dear people of the Northern Mariana Islands:

The reports of the Lt. Governor and the Washington Representative reflect the intelligence and enthusiasm that they have brought to this administration. We work together as a team and I am very appreciative of their contributions to the welfare of the Commonwealth.

My assignment today is to set forth the basic facts regarding the serious financial crisis facing this community: (1) what we found when this administration took office; (2) what... (more)

69% favor closing Liaison Offices

In a widely participated poll, Politics Now asked the people to vote on whether or not the administration should proceed with its plan to shut down the liaison offices in Guam and Hawaii.
PN posed the question, "Do you agree with the Administration's plan to close the Hawaii and Guam Liaison Offices?"
Here are how the results panned out: 69%-Yes *** 27%-No *** 5%-Undecided
Should this move be implemented, the Guam and Hawaii offices will solely become Medical Referral Centers as earlier hinted by Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez. The closure of the liaison offices looks to save the... (more)
